Series VIII - Kashmir After 1947
This article is a continuation of the series on History of India (See the Left Column).
Bringing up this issue is not my idea. But we coming from various our countries, either India or Pakistan would see our maps changed once we come to other countries. When did this happen and how? It is an ongoing saga... a dreadful history of casualties. Keeping aside the triumphing cries of the people, who still want to fight for land and for freedom, the lives that are innocent are being slaughtered to death making the witnesses of the violence ferocious enough to create more of it. A vicious cycle.
Let us go through the maps and see what happened after the DIVIDE.
Let us not go into the details of the division as it is going to be a great controversy. I have seen people with all kinds of opinions on all kinds of leaders involved, but the fact no one knows. Before the divide the Britishers separated the areas according to religion to cut out the land to pieces. This is how it looked.
The night of 15th August of the divide, the British have made up this map of our country according to the treaties they had with various princely states and provinces. The exodus of migration of people took place.
The state of Jammu and Kashmir was one of a number of Indian states that recognized British paramountcy. Prior to the withdrawal of the British from India, the state came under pressure from both India and Pakistan to join them. The Maharaja of Kashmir, Hari Singh wanted to remain independent and tried to delay the issue. However at the time of British withdrawal the state was invaded by tribals from the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) and regular Pakistani soldiers. The Maharaja then decided to accede Kashmir to secular India, which promptly sent troops into Kashmir and thus started a war.

The Indians now started to get the upper hand in all sectors. Punch was finally relieved after a siege of over a year. The Gilgit forces in the High Himalayas, who had previously made good progress, were finally defeated. The Indians pursued as far as Kargil before being forced to halt due to supply problems. The Zoji-La pass was forced by using tanks (which had not been thought possible at that altitude) and Dras was recaptured. The use of tanks was based on experience gained in Burma in 1945.
Moves up to cease-fire
Moves up to cease-fire
At this stage Indian Prime Minister Mr. Jawahar Lal Nehru decided to ask UN to intervene. A UN cease-fire was arranged for the 31 December 1948. A few days before the cease-fire the Pakistanis launched a counter attack, which cut the road between Uri and Punch. After protracted negotiations a cease-fire was agreed to by both countries, which came into effect. The terms of the cease-fire as laid out in the UNCIP resolution. of August 13, 1948 were adopted by the UN on January 5, 1949. This required Pakistan to withdraw its forces, both regular and irregular, while allowing India to maintain minimum strength of its forces in the state to preserve law and order. On compliance of these conditions a plebiscite was to be held to determine the future of the territory. In all, 1,500 soldiers died on each side during the war and Pakistan was able to acquire roughly two-fifths of Kashmir while India acquired the majority of Kashmir, including the most populous and fertile regions.
